Lower Wacker Drive
Days after a man crashed his car and died during a drag race on Lower Wacker Drive, changes are being made to try to make it impossible.
The crash happened between a BMW and a Jeep heading west on Lower Wacker Drive near Garvey Court about 4:20 a.m., police said. The BMW struck the Jeep, then a concrete barrier.
About 9 p.m., a police squad car with its lights and sirens on was responding to a call in the 0-100 block of North Wacker when it was struck by a southbound Lincoln LS, police said.
The crash was reported about 8:40 p.m. in the 100 block of South Lower Wacker Drive. All five were listed in serious-to-critical condition, according to fire media. One person needed to be extricated from a vehicle.
After several years of re-construction, the north-south section of upper Wacker Drive opened to traffic in downtown Chicago this morning. Lower Wacker will re-open to traffic early this afternoon.
About a year and a half after it began, the work to rebuild about half of Wacker Drive has shifted south.
