Police Officers Injured
Four police officers were injured early Wednesday, when they ran into a burning apartment building to help people escape in west suburban Berwyn. A resident also suffered serious burns.
The officers were responding to a call about 10:45 p.m. and driving southbound with emergency lights on in the 2000 block of North Western Avenue when the squad car crashed into another vehicle driving westbound on Armitage Avenue, said police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.
Harrison District officers were escorting a woman to her vehicle in an alley after a domestic disturbance, but as they approached the vehicle they saw her boyfriend inside. He tried to drive away and the vehicle struck two officers, a fence and a building, police said.
Makeeba Gates, 20, was charged Wednesday with one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident, and cited for driving on a suspended license, operating a motor vehicle without insurance and failure to reduce speed for emergency vehicles.
The officers were responding to a call and heading north in the 8800 block of South Jeffery Boulevard about 10:45 p.m. when a woman driving a silver sedan west on 89th Street collided with the police SUV in the intersection, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.
Two officers responded to a call of a couple fighting and throwing things at each other about 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, and found Brian Hall, 28, and Leporsha Doby, 29, arguing at their home in the 300 block of Franklin Street.
The two Hickory Hills police officers were in a squad car in the 7800 block of West 93rd Street about 1 a.m. when a woman driving a 2014 Audi without headlights on veered into their vehicle.
The officers’ unmarked squad car was traveling north in the 3800 block of North Pulaski Road about 11 p.m., when an SUV traveling south turned left in front of the police vehicle, causing the crash.
