Same Sex Civil Unions
After enacting civil unions in Illinois last year, Gov. Pat Quinn said Monday he’s now ready to work towards legalizing gay marriage.
A day after voters in North Carolina approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, President Barack Obama told ABC News that “same sex couples should be able to get married.”
Civil union licenses will start being issued in Illinois starting on Wednesday and Cook County Clerk David Orr expects a big rush early in the morning.
Civil unions between same sex couples become legal in Illinois next Wednesday, with the first ceremonies starting on Thursday. That’s prompting joy in the gay community, but also an effort by gay marriage opponents to fight the new law.
