Local prosecutors in Illinois now have the power to go after street gangs as criminal organizations, much like the way federal prosecutors often target members of the mob.

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and Police Supt. Garry McCarthy are urging Gov. Pat Quinn to quickly sign legislation considered to be a powerful new tool for law enforcement agencies to target gangs in Illinois.
