Winter in Chicago has a reputation of being brutal and unforgiving, but some locals are able to see beyond the horrible commutes and blistering winds by partaking in some fun-filled winter activities. McFetridge Ice Rink is part of the Chicago Park District McFetridge Sports Center, and is a newly renovated indoor ice skating facility. Skate rentals are offered for $3, and public skating is available for all ages. The general fee for public skating is $5 on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays with discounted prices for students and seniors. Tot, freestyle, ice dancing classes, as well as sport activities are available for those registering through the Chicago Park District. Located at Millennium Park, McCormick Tribune Ice Rink is open from November 14 to March 8, 2015. While there are skate rentals available for $10, visitors are encouraged to bring their own skates. This open-to-the-public rink is a favorite with locals and tourists since it is free of charge. Take in the sights while skating around the rink, all in the heart of the city. Rather than visiting an indoor rink, Wentworth Ice Rink captures the true essence of wintertime in the city. This outdoor rink is open to the pubic and offers a number of different classes. Whether you're just learning to skate or partaking in a hockey class, there is something for everyone at Wentworth Ice Rink. Skate rentals are generally $6, but there are discounted prices available for families. Admission is $3 for adults, but free for children and students with a valid school ID. Blackhawks practices are held at Johnny's Ice House East, and are free to the public to view. This is a great place to sign your child up for an ice skating activity, especially after seeing their favorite team practice.

Midway Plaisance Ice Skating Park will be open from November 28, 2014 to March 1, 2015. While it is in the city, there is free street parking surrounding the park. General admission is $3, skate rentals are $6 and discounted prices are offered for combination tickets and family skating dates. Because it is an outdoor rink, families are encouraged to bundle up and enjoy the winter weather. If you're looking to get on the ice without paying the parking garage fees and exorbitant skate rental fees, Midway Ice Skating is the place to go.
