2 dead including child when train hits car

GARY, Ind. (CBS) ― Two people are dead after a South Shore commuter train slammed into a car in Northwest Indiana Friday morning.

The driver of the southbound car went around the gates at a crossing on the Lake-Porter County line, and into the path of the westbound train around 9:15 a.m., according to Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District spokesman John Parsons.

One of the people killed was a small child. Two others in the car were also injured.

The eight-car train originated in South Bend and was bound for Chicago.
