Smoke Shuts Down Red Line Subway

UPDATED 11/29/10 10:27 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) - Smoke on the tracks from a small tie fire closed the Red Line subway Monday morning.

The smoke was spotted around 9:30 a.m. at track level near the Clark/Division stop, officials said.

A rail operator was able to extinguish the fire that produced the smoke, Chicago Transit Authority spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski said.

During that time, power was removed in both directions and Red Line trains were rerouted to operate on the elevated tracks between the Fullerton and Cermark-Chinatown stations, Hosinski said.

As of about 9:55 a.m. normal service was resumed, she said.

By just after 10 a.m., trains were back on schedule.

Fire officials were sent to the scene although the small fire was already extinguished and there were no reports of injuries, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis said.
