Woman, 95, Dead After Falling Out Window

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 95-year-old woman who plunged through a screen window and fell about eight feet to the ground below was dead on the scene Sunday morning outside her South Side home.

The woman -- identified as Ella Powell, according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office -- was found outside her home at in the 800 block of East 88th Place, dead of an apparent fall from a height.

She was dead on the scene, according to the spokeswoman.

Police said the woman went to bed about 9 p.m. Saturday night and when a relative checked on her at 9:30 a.m., she found the bedroom window's screen torn and the elderly woman on the ground outside, police said. The relative was the only other person home at the time, according to police.

Police determined she fell about six to 10 feet from the window of the elevated, first-floor residence.

Calumet Area detectives are conducting a death investigation.
