Axelrod To Head U of C Political Institute After Election

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Political strategist and former presidential adviser David Axelrod will launch a political institute at his alma mater, the University of Chicago, after the 2012 election.

Axelrod and university officials are set to announce Thursday that Axelrod will lead the school's new Institute of Politics after the presidential election.

The institute will be aimed at helping students interested in careers in public and social service by offering related extracurricular activities.

Axelrod was a senior adviser to President Barack Obama before taking over as senior strategist for his re-election campaign.

He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1976.

Axelrod said his goal is to "introduce more students to the spirit of public service."
