Son Charged With Murder Of Mother, 62, In Her South Side Home

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Authorities say a 62-year-old woman whose body was found in her South Side home earlier this week was killed by her own son.

Earnest L. McGee, 34, was charged Thursday morning with the murder of his mother, Aletha McGee, 62. She was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds late Tuesday in her home near 90th Street and Dobson Avenue in the Burnside neighborhood.

Earnest McGee was ordered held without bond. He allegedly shot his mother in the basement of the home and then called to report her death.

Details of the motive have not been released.

Aletha McGee's family members had asked police to check on her when they hadn't heard from her in a few days. Her two sons were standing outside the home Wednesday morning as police searched for evidence.

Aletha McGee's neighbor, Laverne Powell, said Wednesday morning that McGee was like a grandmother to many.

"I've been here since I was like 5. Me and her grandson – we were, like, best friends, and she was always there, no matter what. She was just a nice person; she was like my grandma," Powell said Wednesday.

Aletha McGee recently retired from AT&T, and had four children and six grandchildren.

On the same night that McGee's body was found, police also found the body of Donald Ellens, 75, who was stabbed to death in his home about six blocks due east near 90th Street and East End Avenue.

Ellens' murder remains unsolved. Police said earlier that they did not believe the two murders are related.
