Gary, Ind. Apartment Building Fire Injures Residents, Firefighters

GARY, Ind. (CBS) – A fire at an apartment building Friday in Gary, Ind. injured residents and firefighters who were battling the blaze.

Fire officials arrived on the scene of a four-story brick building at 713 W. 35th Avenue around 4 p.m. Friday with heavy fire and smoking showing through all four floors.

One woman jumped from an upper floor and landed on the ground, where rescuers began working her. Three residents reportedly were transported to the hospital, along with three firefighters.

Antoinette Gholson and her family say the fire broke out without warning and that no smoke alarms sounded.

"All of a sudden I heard boom, boom, boom," she says. "I just screamed and told the kids to get out."

Most residents managed to get out on their own. The people who've been displaced are being assisted by the Red Cross.

An investigation continues.
