Calumet Twp. Man Gets 33 Years For Ax Killing

CROWN POINT, Ind. (CBS) -- A Calumet Township man was sentenced to 33 years in a pickax slaying of a man who stole his prized shotgun and sold it for drugs.

Calvin James Peacock, 32, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of Kevin Sperry in October 2009 at Peacock's home at 3963 Calhoun St., Gary.

Peacock admitted he was angry at Sperry, an uninvited house guest, and argued with him over the shotgun, which had been a gift from Peacock's grandfather.

Peacock confronted Sperry and struck him with a pickax in the head.

In April, police discovered bones buried in the backyard.

A murder charge, which is punishable by 45 to 65 years, was dismissed under terms of the plea agreement.
