State Investigates Death Of Infant On SW Side

(STMW) -- Authorities are investigating the death of an infant after she was found unresponsive on the Southwest Side Sunday morning.

Police officers found 1-month-old Zaniya Gordon unresponsive about 7 a.m. at a home in the 1300 block of West 110th Place, authorities said. Zaniya, of the 1300 block of South May Street, was pronounced dead shortly after, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Child welfare workers are investigating allegations of neglect against Zaniya's mother, said Jimmie Whitelow, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. The infant's mother faced similar allegations in a prior DCFS investigation launched last month, Whitelow said.

Welfare workers removed a child from the mother's care, Whitelow said, adding that the child is living with relatives.

The Chicago Police Department is also investigating Zaniya's death, said Police News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss.

An autopsy for Zaniya is scheduled for Monday.
