Off-Duty Cop Catches Mail Thief
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago police officer spotted a mail heist yesterday afternoon on the West Side, but wasn't in a position to stop it.
"I saw a postal truck and the window was broken out," said Officer Damien Bolden. "I saw two, male offenders loading mail from the postal truck into a black suburban."
However, Officer Bolden was off-duty.
"Actually I wasn't armed yesterday. I wasn't armed and I didn't have my badge either."
No gun, no badge, so he watched and followed while relaying his location to the 911 dispatcher. Enter on-duty officer Jeffery Bertrand who was on patrol.
"Routine patrol at that point. Monitored the radio, trying to follow along with their whereabouts.," said Bertrand. "Eventually we were able to detain the offender."
Nice work says Commander Barbra West.
"The valued actions of these officers exemplify the dedication and commitment officers display on a daily basis."
