Police In NW Indiana Stop Bank Robbery By Man Dressed As CTA Employee

DYER, Ind. (STMW) -- Charges are pending against a man after police thwarted his attempt to rob a bank Sunday morning.

An off-duty officer with the Homewood, Ill., Police Department contacted Dyer Police at 9:55 a.m. with reports of a suspicious black male wearing a CTA uniform, hat and sunglasses and pacing in front of the TCF Bank Branch in the Jewel-Osco Store, 805 Joliet St., a representative with Dyer Police said. The off-duty officer recognized the man as a suspect in a bank robbery at another TCF Bank in Illinois last week.

When Dyer Police entered the store, the man fled through a delivery entrance and allegedly pointed a gun at a delivery person as he fled, the representative said. Dyer Cpl. Richard Nester and Officers Darrell Shaffer and Shane Hendron then pursued the suspect across Calumet Avenue.

The officers caught up with the suspect, who'd discarded the CTA uniform and firearm during the pursuit, in the parking lot of 2070 Calumet Ave. The suspect resisted arrest and was subdued by taser.

The suspect is in custody, the representative said, and Dyer Police are working with Illinois law enforcement agencies and the FBI on the investigation. Charges are expected to be filed Monday morning.

No bystanders were injured during the incident.
