Plainfield Township Man Shot By Police Dies

PLAINFIELD TWP. (STMW) -- A 17-year-old Plainfield Township man died Friday after being shot by police Dec. 20, according to the Will County coroner's office.

Jose Chavez Sanchez died at 3:29 p.m. Friday at Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, according to the coroner's office. Police said a Will County sheriff's officer shot Sanchez after he slashed her face with a knife about 7:30 p.m. Dec. 20 in a house in the 2300 block of Gaylord Road in Plainfield Township. Sheriff's police are investigating the incident.

Autopsy results Saturday showed Sanchez died from sepsis caused by bullet wounds, according to the coroner's office.

Will County sheriff's spokesman Ken Kaupas said a knife wound went down the officer's forehead, between her eyes and across her nose, severing her left nostril before stopping near her lip.

Kaupas said the officer required 12 stitches on the inside of her face and 30 stitches on the outside. She was treated and released from Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center, and the wounds may require reconstructive surgury.

According to Kaupas, the woman and another officer responded to the house after a family member called in a domestic disturbance.

"When they went into the house, (Sanchez) came charging down the hallway," Kaupas said. "One inch away, he would have had one of her eyes."

Sanchez's visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Delgado Funeral Chapel, 400 Landau Ave., Joliet.

His funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 404 N. Hickory St.
