Pilot Killed In Small Plane Crash In LaPorte, Ind.

LAPORTE, Ind. (CBS) -- The pilot and sole-occupant of a small plane was killed in a crash in LaPorte County Indiana, according to a press release from the LaPorte County Sherriff's Office.

The LaPorte County Sheriff's Office says deputies received a call around 7 a.m. Sunday about a plane crash near Division and County Roads.

Deputies observed a crop duster in the area, still flying and because no wreckage or evidence of a plane crash could be found and they cleared the area.

Another 911 call was made just before noon by a pilot who located the wreckage of an ultra-light airplane in a field east of County Road 600 East, south of Division Road.

Sheriff's deputies went to the corn field and located the plane and found the pilot dead. The deputies reported that the wreckage was not visible from the road.

Police identified the pilot as 36-year-old Benjamin T. Hubbard of South Bend. The FAA and NTSB are investigating.
