3-Year-Old Child Abducted, Then Returned In Mundelein

MUNDELEIN, Ill. (CBS) -- A 3 year-old girl was abducted steps away from her door in Mundelein and then returned.

Police believe the suspect was passing out candy in the 500 block of Deepwoods Drive.

CBS 2's Mike Parker reports investigators are working to match a suspect with a name and a motive.

3-Year-Old Child Abducted, Then Returned In Mundelein

A mother goes into her apartment house with groceries and for just a moment, leaves het nine and three year old daughters outside. In that moment a man in a car pulls up to the girls. It is a black mid 2000's Hyundai Accent with custom wheel rims.

"There was a short conversation with the girls then the offender grabs the three-year-old, picks her up and carries her back to his car which was parked a short distance away," said Mundelein Police Chief Eric Guenther.

Some 30 minutes later the man returns the girl, confused and distraught to a parking lot behind the building and drives off.

"She appears to be physically okay and we did some physical exams with her. That part is still under investigation. We are waiting for results back from doctors for that information," said Chief Guenther.

Witnesses say he had been cruising the area for two days.

Sot tari phillips/neighbor "I am definitely worried he may be back because I was told that earlier in the same day he had approached 11 and 13 year old girls," said neighbor Tari Phillips.

Neighbor Al Swall talked to those girls.

They told him the man "...approached them and asked if they wanted candy. The girls said no so he left and then came back here and snatched the little three-year-old."

The suspect is described as Hispanic, 20 to 30 years old with short curly black hair and a goatee.
