Crystal Lake Marine Buried At Arlington Cemetery

(CBS) -- The remains of a Marine from Crystal Lake now lie at Arlington National Cemetery - buried two-and-a-half weeks ago, along with five other members of his unit who died in Afghanistan in 2012.

WBBM Newsradio's Steve Miller reports Marine Capt. Nathan McHone was 29. He was killed when his helicopter went down.

An investigation showed the crew was not at fault; that the Vietnam-era helicopter crashed because of mechanical failure.

Those Sea Stallion helicopters have now all been retired.

"They should have retired them sooner because there was also, prior to Nathan's crash, one of them went down in Hawaii that killed a young man as well," said McHone's mother, Sylvia.

She said he loved skydiving; that he joined the Marines in 2005 because they promised him a flight position.

"One of his fellow Marines in a memorial to him stated that he'd spent his whole life trying to get off the ground. He's in heaven. He's truly off the ground now," she said.
