Man Attempts To Abduct Girl, 5, From Brighton Park Neighborhood

CHICAGO (CBS)) -- Chicago Police have issued a community alert after man with a gun tried to abduct a five-year-old girl from the backyard of her home.

Parents told CBS 2's Derrick Blakley the incident has them wary about safety in their Brighton Park neighborhood.

"One of the girls came in and she said, 'Judith, Judith...there's a guy outside, he had a gun...he tried to take Evolette,'" said babysitter Judith Hernandez.

It happened Saturday afternoon, just after 4:30. A car crept down the alley and a man with a gun entered the backyard and tried to physically abduct the girl.

"I brought all the kids inside and that's when I called police," said Hernandez.

In the 3500 block of Mozart, the incident came as a jolt, just at the time springtime warmth means, kids want to be outside.

"I feel it's frightening to everybody in the community because everyone is it risk and I feel it's very important that people be aware," said Melissa Leon.

The kids are now under closer watch. A little bit of freedom lost to fear.

"If they're outside, someone has to be with them. usually we can just watch them for the window, but that's not enough anymore," said Hernandez.

Police describe the suspect as a male Hispanic, 25 to 35 years of age, with black hair, a moustache or goatee, who was driving a black car.

Anyone with information about the attempted abduction should contact detectives at (312) 747-8380.
