Report A Drunk Driver, Get $100

Podcast

CHICAGO (CBS) -- This coming Memorial Day weekend - if you see a drunk driver and report it, you could get $100.

WBBM's Steve Miller reports.

"The tragic consequences are heartbreaking when somebody decides to get into a car and they think that they're OK to drive. And they're not," said Rita Kreslin, the executive director of the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists.

Kreslin said AAIM will pay out $100 to people who report drunk drivers throughout the state of Illinois over this holiday weekend.

It's a program that started in 1990.

"We have paid out over $486,000. That's 4,866 people that have been drinking and driving that have been removed from the roadways," Kreslin said.

She said AAIM has taken some flak for its approach, but "the majority of those people are probably the same people that would drink and drive and not think twice about it."

"I really feel that anybody that's had anything in their life directly related to a drunk driving crash - if they've lost someone or had somebody injured - then they get it."

Kreslin said her own 19-year-old son was killed in a drunk-driving crash in 2002.
