(CBS) — Monday’s firing of the Carbondale police chief has given new hope to a Morton Grove family – as they look for answers in the death of a 19-year-old SIU sophomore.

The statement from the Carbondale city manager about the firing of Police Chief Jody O’Guinn was short and to-the-point.

It ended by saying the firing is “a confidential matter and has nothing to do with the unsolved cases or recent litigation filed against the City and the Chief.”

The family of Pravin Varughese has filed suit against O’Guinn and the city – alleging that police have ignored evidence in the case.

Priya Varughese is Pravin’s sister says the family is hopeful change in the police department will mean progress in her brother’s case.

“Hopefully… someone else will lead them in the right direction.”

She says the family was glad to get the news of Chief O’Guinn’s firing – exactly six months to the day after her brother’s body was found.
