What Does Rahm Want From His Buddy, Governor-Elect Rauner? Money

CHICAGO (CBS) -- With his friend Bruce Rauner preparing to take the helm as the next governor of Illinois in two months, Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Wednesday outlined his hopes and expectations for the incoming administration.

WBBM Newsradio Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports the mayor said any advice he has for Rauner will be in private, but a reporter asked what he wants from the new governor, besides money.

"Well, that's a good place to start. Does anybody have a problem with money? Okay, okay, there," Emanuel said. "How about this? More money."

Joking aside, the mayor said he wants to stress some things as Illinois gets ready for its first Republican Governor in 12 years.

"I'm going to be clear to Governor-elect Rauner of the importance of investing in the city of Chicago, primarily in our education," he said.

Emanuel said he also wants to see solid investments in transportation, as well.

As for the hotly-debated 2011 income tax hike, which begins rolling back in January, the mayor said he favors extending the tax hike, as long as the money goes to schools.

CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports Governor Pat Quinn called Governor-Elect Bruce Rauner Wednesday morning. It's the first time the two spoke directly to each other since the campaign debates.

Both describe the conversation as cordial, and dealt mostly with the signup period for the Affordable Care Act, which will overlap the two administrations. The governor said he'd assigned his chief of staff to oversee the transition. Rauner thanked him for that and for his service.
