CTA Holiday Bus To Roll Out Tuesday

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The CTA's first-ever Holiday Bus begins rolling through the streets of Chicago Tuesday.

From its reindeer antlers and cinnamon scent to Santa's den and armchair, it's clear that this is no ordinary 60-foot CTA bus, although it will be operating in regular service, beginning Tuesday and Wednesday on the J14/Jeffery Jump.

The CTA's Catherine Hosinski said it was no easy job determining where the bus will go. In the end, she said, CTA chose nine of its most heavily-traveled routes, making sure all areas of the city were included. Other Holiday Bus appearances include:

  • Thursday and Friday: 62/Archer
  • Saturday and Dec. 9: 3/King Drive
  • Dec. 10 and 11: 12/Roosevelt
  • Dec. 12 and 13: 66/Chicago
  • Dec. 17 and 18: 56/Milwaukee
  • Dec. 19 and 20: 22/Clark
  • Dec. 22: 124/Navy Pier
  • Dec. 23: 49/Western

The exterior of the bus is decorated to resemble Santa's sleigh, complete with the antlers and shining red nose. Strings of lights outline the windows. There will be special holiday-themed red-white-and-green seating, candy-cane striping, artwork inside and out created by students at the Mahalia Jackson Elementary School and interior decorations that also include toy soldiers and decorated trees. There will be opportunities to pose with Santa for photos and elves will be handing out candy canes.
