Joliet Animal Shelter Gets Reprieve After Successful Fundraising Drive

(CBS) -- An animal rescue group that seemed to be at death's door has made a miraculous recovery, thanks to a holiday fundraising drive, reports WBBM's Bob Roberts.

Cache Creek Animal Rescue is not out the woods yet. It still needs to move from its Joliet Township location in the next week but at least its bills are paid and it has money in the bank from its $80,000 GoFundMe drive to negotiate a lease with one of two locations in New Lenox or Plainfield, says executive director Donna Hawk.

"I can't remember the last time I've been in this position," she said.

The money arrived just in time. The van that Hawks uses to transport rescued dogs from the group's southern Illinois intake shelter broke down. It is now fixed.

ComEd has restored power. Hawk has even talked about hiring a vet part-time to hold down the animal rescue's bills.
