Woman Raped In Wicker Park

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago police were searching for the man who sexually assaulted a woman in Wicker Park early Monday.

A 25-year-old woman was walking in the 1700 block of West Pierce Avenue shortly before 2 a.m. Monday, when a man approached her from behind, grabbed her by the neck, and dragged her into an alley.

The man then ripped open her pants and sexually assaulted her. The victim screamed for her life, and a passerby who heard her pleas for help confronted the attacker, who ran away, police said.

The victim was in stable condition at the hospital on Tuesday.

People who live near the scene of the attack said they were shocked by what happened.

"Considering when you have to park, there's never anywhere to park around here; sometimes you have to park two blocks away, and you come in late. It's nerve-wracking," Jessica White said.

Orli Korrub said she parks in the alley where the woman was attacked.

"I walk here all the time. I mean, that's alarming; extremely scary," Korrub said.

No one was in custody Tuesday morning.

The suspect was described as a 25- to 40-year-old black man between 5-foot-8 and 6 feet tall and 180 to 220 pounds, police said. He was wearing dark pants and a dark coat and might have been armed with a handgun.

Anyone with information about the suspect should call Area North detectives at (312) 744-8200
