(CBS) Critics of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell shot arrows in his direction for how he’s handled league policies on concussions and domestic violence. Fortunately for Goodell, the shield he stands behind is strong and fortified by ever-growing popularity and profits.

Boosted by lucrative television deals, league revenues are nearing $10 billion. Goodell didn’t do so shabby himself, earning $35 million in take-home pay in 2013. That figure is commensurate with his 2012 salary, as $9 million of his $44 million earnings in 2012 was deferred pay.

Keep in mind, the NFL is a non-profit, as such, they are legally required to disclose executive compensation. To put that figure in context, Goodell ranks among the highest-paid CEO’s in America.
