High-Rise Glass Falls, Hits Man On Head

Falling Glass Hits Man

(CBS) – A piece of glass fell from a downtown high-rise Thursday and hit a man on the head.

The Chicago Fire Department says the man was hit just before noon outside 101 E. State. He was bleeding but conscious and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition. The man was expected to be okay, but the incident caused concern among pedestrians and residents of the densely packed area.

The 16th floor window was mostly intact, but pieces were missing from the bottom. The city's Building Department said a chain-reaction accident within the building broke the window and sent pieces of it to the sidewalk and street.

"It's kind of rare something like this happens, but live in city – anything's possible," neighbor Ray Robertson says.

While the window was being stabilized, Rush Street was blocked off between Ontario and Erie. A parking garage on Rush Street was effectively shut down, WBBM's Steve Miller reports.

The building is mostly vacant but undergoing construction.
