(CBS) — As teenagers get ready prom season and graduation, one suburban police department is asking parents to make sure they play it safe.

The Park Ridge Police Department issued an open letter to parents in the area asking them to set some ground rules with their kids when it comes to parties and celebrations.

“Our experience has been that during those times, kids like to celebrate and sometimes, unfortunately, they choose to celebrate maybe inappropriately with alcohol and put themselves at risk for injury,” said Park Ridge Deputy Police Chief Lou Jogmen.

Jogmen says the letter is meant to let residents know that prom and graduation parties can often cause poor choices to be made. He says because parents aren’t usually well-versed or aware of the ramifications when police show up, the letter hopes to spell out what exactly will happen.
