Mom Charged After 8-Year-Old Boy Shot While Playing With Gun

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 31-year-old woman with a felony conviction on her record has been charged with child endangerment, after her 8-year-old son was accidentally shot while he and another child played with her boyfriend's gun.

Micquelyn Biles has been charged with a felony count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, and a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child, police said.

Biles' son was shot in the stomach Tuesday morning, after he and another 8-year-old boy found a gun inside her apartment in the 3700 block of west 13th Street, and began playing with it, according to Chicago police.

After her son was shot, a relative drove him to the emergency room at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in good condition on Tuesday.

Biles pleaded guilty to felony forgery charges in 2003, and served 18 months of probation. After her son was shot, she allegedly told police she didn't know the gun was in her home, but police said they determined she was lying, and the gun belonged to her boyfriend.

Police said her boyfriend was not in custody as of Thursday morning, but the case was still under investigation.

Biles was due in court for a bond hearing Thursday afternoon.
