South Side Grocery Catches Fire After Armed Robbery

An Auburn Gresham neighborhood grocery store caught fire after it was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday night on the South Side.

Two gunmen walked into the store about 9:20 p.m. in the 7500 block of South May Street, announcing a robbery and forcing everyone inside the store into a back room, police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.

The duo made off with an unspecified amount of cash, and the store occupants noticed smoke coming from the building when they left the back room, Greer said.

Fire crews extinguished the small blaze a short time later and no one was injured, according to police.

The cause of the fire was unknown early Wednesday and it wasn't clear if it was connected to the robbery, police said.
