Scanner Traffic Details Busy 4th Of July For Chicago Cops

CHICAGO (CBS) -- It was a very busy 4th of July night for Chicago Police. Scanner recordings show just what they were dealing with. CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot has this Original Report.

Around 8:34 p.m., on July 4th, Chicago police responded to several calls of fireworks being set off inside Navy Pier.

"Several 9-1-1 calls came in during that explosion by the IMAX and several people said that they were hiding in the restrooms," the police dispatcher said.

During the chaos, people were running for cover and looking for loved ones after hearing explosions in the food court area too.

"What are we doing with missing children? I have a grandma by the McDonald's who lost her son when the M80 went off by the IMAX," the dispatcher said. "We're missing a male black. 11 years of age."

Moments later, police arrested a person at the main entrance of Navy Pier.

"Fireworks. Shooting off a Roman candle. We have one in custody. They threw more fireworks. If there's EMS or a medic. One lady got trampled a little bit. She's okay. She's stable. We're bringing her inside to Navy Pier," an officer said

After the incident, at 8:40 p.m. a supervisor makes the decision to close Navy Pier for the evening.

"Just make the announcement that the pier is closed," he said. "That we're not accepting anymore patrons. Okay. Keep on making that announcement."

Around 10:06 p.m. a man is shot during an argument on a sidewalk in Streeterville.

"211 E. Ohio, we have a possible person shot. We're rolling an ambulance at 211 E. Ohio," the dispatcher said.

Police caught the suspected shooter, after a foot chase.

We're told in anticipation of large crowds officers worked 12-hour shifts that overlapped and in turn created a 30 percent increase in manpower for the holiday weekend.
