Naperville Woman Found Dead In Texas Jail Cell Following Arrest

(CBS) -- There's growing buzz over the fate of a Naperville woman.

She took a road trip to Texas for a new job and ended up dead in a jail cell.

CBS 2's Brad Edwards tries to unravel the mystery.

28-year-old Naperville businesswoman Sandra Bland was found dead Monday morning in a jail cell in Waller County, Texas, which is 50 miles north of Houston.

Bland was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer during a routine traffic stop.

A friend of the arrested posted video purporting to be Bland's arrest, showing her cuffed on the ground yelling, "All this for a traffic signal?"

The Waller County Sheriff's Office says she was found "not breathing from what appears to be self-inflicted asphyxiation" and CPR was immediately performed and that Bland was pronounced dead shortly after. Authorities say her death appears to be suicide.

Bland's friends say she had been with her family in suburban Chicago over the July 4th holiday, and drove to Texas for a job interview at her alma mater, a job she got.

Some family members and friends say Bland was found hanging in the jail cell, but authorities have not confirmed the exact circumstances around her death.

A small group protested outside the jail questioning the narrative. Some have taken to social media to question the official account of her death with hashtags including #sayhername and #whathappenedtosandrabland.

Bland spoke out about police brutality often on her Facebook page.

An investigation of what happened is now in the hands of the Texas Rangers.
