Off-Duty Chicago Ridge Police Officer Killed In Wrong-Way Accident On Tri-State

(CBS) -- An off-duty Chicago Ridge police officer was killed in an accident on the Tri-State Tollway caused by a wrong-way driver Sunday morning, state police said.

Officer Steven A. Smith, 25, was a passenger in one of three vehicles involved in the crash that happened around 3:45 a.m. near the Cermak Road Toll Plaza in Hillside. Two other people were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Chicago Ridge Police Chief Robert Pyznarski says Smith joined the department part time in 2010 and became full time in February 2015 and he is a veteran of the Marine Corps.
