Terri Hemmert Getting By With A Little Help From Her Friends

(CBS) – Longtime WXRT 93.1 FM on-air personality Terri Hemmert says she's grateful for all the words of support she has received since announcing she would take some time off for cancer surgery and recovery.

Hemmert is perhaps best known as host of the weekly show "Breakfast with the Beatles," a treasure trove of trivia about Fab Four songs that airs each Sunday. She recorded segments for it on Friday, which also was her last day at the station – for a while.

Among the songs she zeroed in on was "Hey Jude," which includes the line about taking a sad song and making it better.

"Physician, heal thyself," Hemmert tells CBS 2's Vince Gerasole. "I am using it on me now to help me deal with this, so, yeah, it's a great sentiment."

For 42 years at 'XRT, in an unassuming and personal way, the 67-year-old Hemmert has bonded with listeners and artists alike.

This week, she told them all she'd been diagnosed with cancer.

"That word is just dynamite, really. I can't think of a scarier word," she says.

Through social media, Terri began hearing from thousands of people she has never met, all offering their love and support.

"It's humbling, it really is," she says. "They talk about prayer circles they have at their church already, and I haven't even gone into surgery yet."

She adds: "I really feel the love."

Terri says she hopes to be back in four to six weeks.

WXRT is owned and operated by CBS, which also owns WBBM-TV.
