Health Officials Pushing Uninsured To Sign Up For Coverage Ahead Of Affordable Care Act Deadline

(CBS) -- If you don't have health insurance, you have just a few days before the January 31 deadline to sign up under the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

Dr. Jay Shannon, CEO of Cook County Health and Hospitals, says look at it this way: "Medical insurance is like friends, you want to have 'em before you need 'em and you don't want to find out you're uninsured and you've got limited options after you've had an unexpected diagnosis, a car accident."

Federal Health and Human Services Regional Director Kathleen Falk says for more than half of uncovered Illinois residents, the cost is $75 or less per month.

"None of us want to wake up on February 1 knowing that there was one more person who suffered for lack of health coverage that we could have reached," Falk said.
