Thieves Targeting Hair Salons In Lake County
(CBS) -- Authorities in Lake County are warning hair salon owners about thieves targeting the businesses.
CBS 2's Marissa Bailey talked with investigators about the break-ins and what business owners and neighbors need to know.
Plywood replaces glass in the front door of CK Salon in Grayslake. Less than a block away another plywood front door at Karma Salon and Spa. Burglars hit both hair salons over the weekend.
"Offenders are forcing entry and going inside and primarily stealing cash from the businesses," said Detective Chris Covelli of the Lake County sheriff's office.
They stole $400 from Karma and not a single dollar from CK but that's only because there was no cash in the drawer.
Officials say two other salons in nearby Long Grove were also hit, for a total of four in Lake County, enough to concern officials.
"This has not only been occurring in Lake County but adjacent counties as well, Cook County, McHenry County, Lake County have all seen an increase of these since November so we've taken four reports since November," said Covelli.
The owner of Karma tells CBS 2 she handed over surveillance video of the burglary that she says lasted only 30 seconds.
The push now? For investigators to work any and all tips that come in.
"We would rather respond and it to be nothing than lose a potential of following up on a very good tip which could solve these so any suspicious activity dial 911," Covelli said.
Investigators say each incident happened in the late or overnight hours.
They're urging business owners to not leave any money or valuables overnight.
