Boy Found Safe After Mom Discovered Dead In Skokie Apartment

(CBS) – Skokie have located a 10-month-old boy, safe and sound, hours after the child's mother was discovered dead Thursday morning.

Authorities found the body of Catherine M. Benyamin, 31, in an apartment at 8239 Keating Avenue after a family member had requested a "well-being" check, the Skokie Police Department said in a news release.

Police initially said the woman's son, Joshua Powell, was unaccounted for. But around 7 p.m., the department announced on Facebook the baby is "has been found safe and unharmed."

The boy had been dropped off earlier in the day at a church in the vicinity of Halsted Street and Roosevelt Road in Chicago, possibly by the child's father, police said.

Police continue seeking the father, identified as Jermaine Powell, 37.

The North Regional Major Crimes Task Force is assisting the Skokie Police Department. Anyone with information about the case was urged to call the Skokie Police Department at (847) 982-5900.

Joshua was at UIC Hospital for routine observation. A family member was with him, police said.
