Rising Lake Michigan Reclaims Chicago Area Shoreline

(CBS) – Lake Michigan is on the rise.

After a record low level three years ago, in part due to the drought, the lake is up almost four feet, rising 15 inches in just the past year.

The boats and their floating docks are a lot higher in Montrose Harbor, and the nearby dog beach is just a fraction of what it once was.

The dog beach that existed at Foster Avenue is now simply called Lake Michigan. These dog beaches aren't the only ones feeling the bite.

At Wilmette's beautiful Gillson Park, the lake has claimed a lot of the public. Imagine what it must feel like to own one of the multi-million-dollar homes nearby.

The homes may have less of a beach. But the good news is, they're suddenly located even closer to the water.

The higher lake level and smaller beaches mean more erosion, and that's a problem.

It's also a reminder that all shorelines are only temporary.
