Standoff Ends After Homicide Suspect Found Dead Inside Home

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A day-long standoff on the South Side ended when a man sought for questioning in a triple homicide was found "unresponsive" inside a home where he had been barricaded since early Thursday morning, police said.

Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said the suspect, Kevin Robinson, who had a long criminal record, died of a "self-inflicted gunshot wound." A gun was found in his hand, Johnson said.

"We have to stop the violence on the streets of Chicago," Johnson said.

Earlier Robinson, 31, fired 12 shots at Chicago police officers after he holed up inside a home in the Fernwood neighborhood.

"Everyone lost a loved one," said the suspect's sister, after she learned her brother was dead.

During the standoff, police played a recording from the Robinson's mother, who pleaded with her son to surrender, said Deputy Chief Steve Georgas.

"I recorded a message for him to let him know that we love him that were here to support him," said Robinson's mother, who did not want to be identified.

Chicago Police First Deputy Supt. John Escalante said Robinson barricaded himself inside a home in the 10300 block of South Union Avenue around 4:30 a.m.

Police had been searching for the man for questioning in the fatal shootings of two women and one man in the Englewood neighborhood late Wednesday night.

Around 9:15 a.m., Robinson leaned out a window and fired several shots at SWAT officers across the street, according to Escalante. Police returned fire.

Investigators said Robinson showed up at a home on the 1500 block of West 71st Street around 11:20 p.m., and opened fire inside and outside the home.

Relatives have identified the victims as 26-year-old Makeesha Starks; her stepfather, 50-year-old Jerome Wright; and her sister-in-law, 26-year-old Kiara Kinard.

Starks and Wright were shot in the head, and pronounced dead at the scene. Kinard was shot in the back, and died at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Police said the shooting appeared to be the result of a domestic dispute.

Robinson is believed to be the father of Starks' two boys.

It's unclear if anyone else was home at the time of the shooting.
