Panel Recommends More Cash Settlements For Fatal Police-Involved Shootings
(CBS) -- Once again, the city of Chicago has settled deadly police-shooting lawsuits out of court – for millions.
CBS 2's Mike Parker reports.
The Chicago City Council's Finance Committee heard how, in 2005, police shot and killed 23-year-old Emannuel Lopez after they say he purposely ran over an officer after a traffic altercation. Police said Lopez was drunk.
Jane Notz, assistant corporation counsel for the city, said officers shot 42 rounds at Lopez and struck him 16 times.
The Finance Committee voted to settle a suit filed by the Lopez family for $2.2 million.
The case had been a flash point for the Latino community.
"It's pretty much a sham in terms of what the cover-up was, and we wanted to have some justice," 1st Ward Ald. "Proco" Joe Moreno said.
The other case involved the 2013 fatal Chicago police shooting of 27-year-old Ryan Rogers.
Rogers allegedly rammed a police van during an undercover Chicago police investigation in suburban East Hazel Crest.
Rogers' girlfriend said he thought the cops were robbers.
Recommended settlement: $1 million.
