Scattered Storms Likely Tuesday Afternoon

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Showers and thunderstorms should ramp up across the Chicago area Tuesday afternoon, and scattered storms could continue on and off through Wednesday.

Storms already were moving through the Rockford area late Tuesday morning, and scattered storms likely will come and go through the afternoon and evening.

There is also a marginal risk for strong or severe thunderstorms on Wednesday, especially in the later afternoon hours, as a cold front moves through. The National Weather Service said the strongest of those storms could produce small hail, heavy downpours, and wind gusts of up to 50 mph.

After Tuesday's unusually warm temperatures – with the high expected to be around 85 – conditions should be much more seasonable for the next week or so, with highs hovering in the mid to upper 70s.

Thursday and Friday should bring a break from the rain, with mostly sunny skies, before another chance for showers on Saturday.
