It's Official: President Barbie Has Female Veep

Ben Larson, CBS 2 Intern

CHICAGO (CBS) — Just in time for the 2016 election, Mattel announced the addition of a new doll that's only a fictitious heartbeat away from America's highest office: vice-president Barbie.

"This is the first time Barbie has featured an all-female ticket with both a president and vice president," says author Carrie Goldman, author of "Bullied: What every Parent, Teacher, and Kid Needs to Know About Ending the Cycle of Fear." "I think it's an excellent way to show girls that women are strong enough to command the highest offices in the country."

Both president Barbie and vice-president Barbie are part of the Barbie Careers line. Other dolls in the line include chef, firefighter and pilot Barbie.

Excited about presidential Barbie's running mate, Lynette Young of New Jersey took to Facebook to express her excitement. "My heart just jumped for joy," posted Young. "Barbie you have outdone yourself this time!"

President and vice-president Barbie come in different hair colors, skin tones and face shapes. They are sold together.

The two dolls are not available yet but can be preordered on the Mattel website.
