Feds Issue Florida Travel Warning For Pregnant Women

(CBS) – The number of people infected with the Zika virus in Florida has jumped by 10.

CBS 2's Charlie De Mar reports.

There are 14 Zika cases -- 12 men, two women -- diagnosed in a one square mile area north of downtown Miami.

Kari Vidal, expecting her second son in just two months, used to live in the center of the Zika outbreak.

The Centers for Disease Control has issued a travel warning for pregnant women and those thinking about starting a family.

"This is pretty significant. This is the first time this has happened in many years," says Dr. Jessica Shepherd, an assistant professor of OBGYN at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

"We want women to be cognizant and really aware of travel, travel whether that's with themselves, family members, and also with sexual practices."

Zika is linked to a birth defect causing babies to be born with abnormally small heads.

At Vega International Travel Services, Gennady Podolsky says he discusses the topic with customers.

The CDC advises people to wear long sleeves and to put on insect repellent.
