Man Steals Money From Wheelchair-Bound Woman's Bra

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A man robbed an elderly, wheelchair-bound woman on Wednesday in New York's East Harlem neighborhood.

Broyoan Lopez, 26, was charged with robbery, grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, according to police.

Police said the Lopez was arrested Friday after being caught on surveillance video, CBS 2 New York's Janelle Burrell reports.

The video showed Lopez reaching into 93-year-old Maria Vasquez's bra to grab an envelope filled with $600 cash. Vasquez believes the man had been watching her withdraw the money at a bank a few doors down and followed her into the clothing store.

Vasquez was sitting in her wheelchair inside of Regines clothing store on 116th Street when the robbery took place Wednesday.

Vasquez said in Spanish, as soon as she realized what happened, she called for her home health aide and store workers to help, but the suspect was gone.

The $600 was Social Security money that was supposed to pay her rent and other bills, she said.

The owner of the store presented Vasquez a check Friday afternoon to replace the money that was stolen.

Vasquez is a regular customer and the store said that was the least they could do.
