Charges Filed Against Robbery Suspect Shot By Police On West Side
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man shot by a Chicago Police officer Sunday night when he was allegedly spotted trying to rob a West Side gas station has been charged.
Sherrod Suttle, 27, has been charged with two counts of attempted robbery armed with a firearm, two counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer with a weapon, one count of possession of a controlled substance and one count of aggravated battery with the use of a deadly weapon, all felonies, according to Chicago Police. He also faces misdemeanor charges of resisting or obstructing an officer and battery.
At 8:52 p.m. Sunday, officers were a block away when they were called to a Citgo gas station at 1001 N. Cicero Ave., Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for Chicago Police, said at the time.
Officers arrived as the robbery was taking place and saw an armed man attempting to rob the gas station. When they approached, the officers "were then confronted" by the suspect and at least one officer opened fire, police said.
The man was shot in the leg and taken in serious-to-critical condition to Stroger Hospital, authorities said.
A handgun was found at the gas station and taken as evidence, Guglielmi said. No officers were injured.
Suttle, who lives in the 4100 block of West Kamerling, was scheduled to appear in bond court Thursday.
The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting, police said. The officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days.
