Cast of Hamilton Encourages Voter Registration

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Cook County Clerk David Orr joined Friday the cast of Hamilton and hit the streets to get people registered to vote.

Miguel Cervantes, who plays Alexander Hamilton said it's a little art imitating life imitating art.

"It's a crazy thing to be part of especially since our show has so much of this in it," Cervantes said. "The coincidence of us doing this show in this time of our country. Alexander Hamilton and all his buddies made decisions and wrote documents and wrote things into existence that affect us right now."

Actors from the New York cast did the same thing a few weeks ago, WBBM's Lisa Fielding reports.

"This is the final push," said Ari Afsar, who plays Eliza Schuyler. "So for us to influence people is an honor to use Hamilton to encourage people."

"I've been inspired," said Karen Olivo, who plays Angelica Schuyler. "Most people say 'Yes, I've already voted.' This is a huge election and they are doing their part and that makes me incredibly happy."

"If we can get one person in here registering to vote, we are changing the world in one small way."

To register to vote, Chicago residents must be a citizen, at least 18 years old by Nov. 8 and a resident of their precinct for at least a month. The deadline to register online is Sunday.

"I was just walking by after work so I wanted to make sure I was registered," said Claire Conner, voter. "I feel good because I definitely want to be voting in this election so it's good to make sure and good that I'm all ready to go."

"This is art imitating life, imitating art which is awesome,"said Cervantes.
