$500,000 Bail For Brother Of Man Fatally Shot By Chicago Police
(STMW) -- The brother of an Indianapolis man killed by Chicago Police officers over the weekend was ordered held on $500,000 bail on Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.
Michael Beal, 28, is charged with aggravated battery to a police officer in the incident Saturday afternoon in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
His brother, Joshua Beal, 25, was killed after he pointed a handgun into a crowd after a traffic altercation, authorities say. Advocates for Joshua Beal question that account.
An off-duty Chicago Police officer and a sergeant driving to work both announced they were officers, ordered Joshua Beal to drop his weapon, then fired at him, according to police.
Afterward, Michael Beal struggled on the street with an off-duty officer. Michael Beal put the officer in a chokehold and tried to grab his brother's gun, saying, "F— you, you killed my brother, I'm going to kill you," prosecutors said.
The officer went to the hospital with injuries including back and neck stiffness.
Michael Beal's attorney unsuccessfully asked the judge to set a low bail, a $1,500 recognizance bond, saying his client doesn't have a criminal record. The lawyer also said Beal's family can't afford to pay a high bail amount and bury Joshua Beal. But the judge set a $500,000 bail without comment.
