CHICAGO (CBS) — Two middle-aged men were slain and at least four more people were wounded in shootings Monday on Chicago’s South and West sides.
The latest killing happened about 12:30 p.m. in the Oakland neighborhood, where officers found 49-year-old Lawerence T. Matchem unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head in the 800 block of East 40th Street, Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. Matchem, who lived in the 4400 block of South La Crosse, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:44 p.m.
An hour earlier in Roseland, officers found 53-year-old Quenten Wright shot in the head near his home in the 11400 block of South King Drive, authorities said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 3:31 p.m.
The latest nonfatal attack happened at 5:52 p.m. in Greater Grand Crossing, where a 24-year-old man was shot in the leg inside a home in the 7400 block of South Harvard. He was taken to Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
Just before 4 p.m., an 18-year-old man was outside in the Back of the Yards neighborhood’s 5400 block of South Honore when he heard gunfire and realized he’d been hit in the back. He took himself to Holy Cross Hospital and later was stabilized at Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.
About 3:30 p.m., someone walked up to a 32-year-old man who was working in the 700 block of West 77th Street in Auburn Gresham and shot him in the leg, police said. He was taken in serious condition to Christ Medical Center.
Monday’s first shooting happened about 10 a.m. in Austin, when an 18-year-old man was shot in the ankle near the intersection of Madison and Lavergne, police said. He ran to call for help from the 5000 block of West Washington and was listed in good condition at Mount Sinai.
The violence followed a weekend that saw 14 people shot in Chicago, two of them fatally.
