Tiger Woods To Help Develop South Side Golf Course

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Celebrity golfer Tiger Woods is eyeing the South Shore neighborhood to create a first-class golf course.

CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports on what Chicago can expect.

Woods knows golf courses. Not only has he played on them since he was a toddler, he now designs them.

BlueJack National in Houston is the latest. Chicago's South Side golf courses are next.

The revitalization calls for a $30-million project that combines the South Shore and Jackson Park golf courses, turning them into an 18-hole championship course.

A new agency called the Chicago Parks Golf Alliance will oversee the project. Mark Rolfing will lead it.

"Overall, you're going to see something whose character is primarily prairie," he says. "(Woods) doesn't believe in building targets that are difficult for the average player."

Golf instructor Emanuel Worley attended a meeting in which plans for the golf course were laid out. It's no surprise to Worley that Woods wants to play golf in Chicago.

"Before he turned professional, he came here," he says.

According to project managers, Woods also chose Chicago so he could introduce more neighborhood kids to golf and give them the opportunity to earn scholarships to college.

The new course will open in 2020.
